About this idea
The elf has collected every single remote control in the house — TV, fan, AC, game console — and stacked them into a tiny fortress wall. The elf sits behind it with a sign reading 'All channels are MINE until further notice. Conditions TBD.' Tape a mini ransom note to the TV using a sticky note. Kids have to negotiate with the elf to get them back.
What you'll need
- Remote controls (TV, fan, AC, game console)
- Small elf doll
- Cardboard sign or small piece of paper
- Marker
- Sticky note or tape
How to set it up
- Arrange the remote controls into a small fortress-like wall around the elf doll.
- Write 'All channels are MINE until further notice. Conditions TBD.' on the cardboard sign or piece of paper and place it next to the elf.
- Attach a sticky note with a mini ransom note to the TV, explaining that the remotes are held until further notice.
- Position the elf doll behind the remote control wall, making it look like it's guarding the remotes.
- Hide the setup in a visible but playful spot where kids will discover it, such as near the TV or on a coffee table.
Tips & variations
- Let the kids come up with their own negotiation ideas and rewards for the elf to make the activity more interactive.
- For added fun, you can hide a small treat or prize that the elf will 'release' upon successful negotiation.
- If you don’t have all the types of remotes mentioned, use any available remotes or even toy remotes to create the fortress.
