About this idea

The elf creates an adventurous treasure map leading to numbered stations around the house (1-10). At station 6 and 7, the elf leaves a funny note saying 'You found 6 and 7!' with small treats or stickers. The elf sits at the final treasure chest (a shoebox decorated with foil) wearing a tiny explorer hat made from paper. Simple drawings mark each station on the map.

What you'll need

  • Paper or printable treasure map
  • Foil or decorative paper
  • Shoebox
  • Small treats or stickers
  • Paper for tiny explorer hat

How to set it up

  1. Draw or print a simple treasure map with 10 stations marked around the house. Place small drawings or symbols at each station on the map.
  2. Decorate a shoebox with foil or colorful paper to create a treasure chest. Place small treats or stickers inside for stations 6 and 7, and write funny notes saying 'You found 6 and 7!'
  3. Cut out a small paper hat for the elf and shape it into an explorer hat. Place the elf inside the decorated shoebox at the final treasure location and position the treasure map where it can be easily found.

Tips & variations

  • Use large, easy-to-follow drawings on the map for preschoolers to identify each station clearly. Hide the map in an obvious place like under a pillow or on the dining table for young children.
  • For added fun, you can hide small objects or pictures at each station that match the numbers (e.g., six small toys at station 6).
  • If you have multiple children, create individual maps or have them work together in teams to find the treasure.
