About this idea
The elf has broken into the tween's Pokémon card collection and is holding the rarest card hostage! Surround the elf with Base Set cards fanned out like a fortune. Add a tiny handwritten ransom note: 'Gotta catch 'em all... and I did. 🔥 —Elf #001'. Prop a Game Boy Color box or printed Game Boy image nearby. Draw a Pokédex on a folded index card. Use tape to make a tiny 'evidence' perimeter. Parents who grew up hunting the original 151 will immediately share this.
What you'll need
- Base Set Pokémon cards
- Small handwritten ransom note (paper and pencil)
- Game Boy Color box or printed Game Boy image
- Index card and marker for Pokédex
- Scotch tape
How to set it up
- Fan out the Base Set Pokémon cards on a table or floor in a semi-circle to create a 'fortune' display.
- Place the handwritten ransom note next to the cards, making sure it’s visible and readable.
- Prop up the Game Boy Color box or printed Game Boy image next to the cards and note.
- Fold an index card in half and draw a simple Pokédex on it with a marker, then place it near the elf.
- Use scotch tape to create a small perimeter around the elf and cards to look like a tiny 'evidence' scene.
Tips & variations
- Let your preschooler help draw the Pokédex or write part of the ransom note for extra fun and participation.
- If you don’t have a Game Boy Color box, print a clear image from online and trim it to size for a neat prop.
- For a variation, hide the elf elsewhere in the house with just the ransom note and a few cards as a clue to start a mini scavenger hunt.
