About this idea

Elf is scaling a 'mountain' (stack of books or couch cushions) with a tiny backpack made from felt. At the summit, place a flag or banner that reads 'Merry Christmas Martin!' with toy climbing gear scattered around. Add small toy animals as mountain friends cheering the elf on.

What you'll need

  • Stack of books or couch cushions
  • Felt (for tiny backpack)
  • Small flag or banner that reads 'Merry Christmas Martin!'
  • Toy climbing gear (like miniature boots, harness, or rope)
  • Small toy animals

How to set it up

  1. Create a tiny backpack using felt by folding and securing it with a safety pin or small stapler, then place a few tiny items inside for the elf to carry.
  2. Arrange the stack of books or couch cushions to form your 'mountain' and place it in a visible spot where the child will discover it.
  3. Position the elf at the base of the mountain with the tiny backpack on, and place the flag or banner at the top of the stack so it looks like the elf has reached the summit.
  4. Scatter the toy climbing gear around the base of the mountain to make it look like the elf is preparing for an adventure.
  5. Place small toy animals near the elf, positioned as if they are cheering the elf on in its mountain-climbing mission.

Tips & variations

  • Use Velcro or small clips to attach the flag or banner to the top of the stack so it stays in place and can be easily removed after the surprise.
  • If you don’t have felt, use a small drawstring pouch or a tiny paper bag tied with ribbon to create the elf’s backpack.
  • For added fun, write a short note to Martin saying, 'Your elf is on a Christmas mission!' to explain the scene.
