About this idea

Your elf has set up an elaborate mini drive-in cinema for stuffed animals! Use a tablet or phone as the movie screen showing an animal documentary or holiday film. Arrange toy animals in rows as the 'audience' sitting in small boxes or toy cars. Add tissue box 'concession stands' with tiny popcorn (white pom-poms), ticket stubs made from paper, and a cardboard marquee sign. The elf can be the ticket taker or projectionist with a flashlight spotlight.

What you'll need

  • Tablet or phone
  • Toy animals
  • Small boxes or toy cars
  • Tissue boxes
  • White pom-poms
  • Cardboard for marquee sign

How to set it up

  1. Arrange toy animals in rows inside small boxes or toy cars around the tablet or phone to create the 'drive-in theater' audience.
  2. Create a marquee sign from cardboard with the movie title written on it and place it at the front of the setup.
  3. Set up tissue boxes as concession stands and place white pom-poms beside them to look like popcorn, then add small pieces of paper as ticket stubs nearby.
  4. Place the elf next to the 'ticket booth' holding a flashlight as a spotlight or behind the tablet as the projectionist.

Tips & variations

  • Use a holiday-themed animal movie to tie in the season, and add small holiday decorations like mini ornaments or tinsel around the concession stands.
  • For added fun, let your preschooler help arrange the toy animals and create their own 'movie title' for the marquee sign.
  • If you don’t have small boxes or toy cars, you can use pillows or build a simple corral with LEGO bricks or blocks to seat the toy animals.
