About this idea
The elf has tampered with phone/tablet autocorrect settings, changing common words to silly holiday phrases. 'Yes' becomes 'Jingle bells yes!', 'okay' becomes 'elf approved', 'I' becomes 'This elf'. Leave a note: 'Hope you enjoy your new vocabulary! Love, your elf.' Tweens will discover it when texting friends. (Parents: remember to change it back after a few texts!)
What you'll need
- Elf doll
- Phone or tablet
- Sticky notes or small paper
- Pen or marker
- Optional: printed or pre-written note
How to set it up
- Place the elf doll next to the family phone or tablet where it will be clearly visible.
- Using sticky notes or paper, write out the elf’s silly autocorrect changes: for example, write 'Yes = Jingle bells yes!', 'okay = elf approved', and 'I = This elf'.
- Stick or place these notes right next to the phone or tablet so they’re easy to see.
- Leave a short note saying: 'Hope you enjoy your new vocabulary! Love, your elf.' Place it near the elf and the notes.
- Wait a few hours or until a family member uses the device, then watch their funny reactions! (Parents: remember to change the settings back afterward.)
Tips & variations
- For younger preschoolers, use pictures or simple symbols instead of text to show the changes.
- Place the elf and notes in a spot where they’ll be noticed right away, like on the kitchen table or bedside stand.
- If you have multiple devices, pick just one to keep it simple and avoid confusion.
