About this idea

The elf is found sitting cross-legged on the floor, completely buried up to its waist inside a toppled foam stacking ring tower, rings scattered in a wide radius around it. One ring is wedged on the elf's head like a crown. The rest are stacked in completely wrong size order nearby, as if the elf tried to rebuild it and got it spectacularly wrong.

What you'll need

  • Foam stacking rings set
  • Elf doll
  • Floor space (carpet or tile)
  • Optional: small piece of paper or card for a note
  • Optional: small basket or bowl for ring collection

How to set it up

  1. Lay out a clear space on the floor where the elf can sit comfortably.
  2. Scatter the foam stacking rings randomly around the area, ensuring some are in completely the wrong size order.
  3. Place the elf doll in a sitting position, cross-legged, and position it so it appears to be buried up to its waist in the scattered rings.
  4. Gently place one of the larger stacking rings on the elf's head like a crown.
  5. Arrange the remaining rings in a haphazard, incorrect stack nearby to complete the 'saboteur' scene.

Tips & variations

  • For added humor, include a small note or card next to the elf that says something like 'I tried to fix it!'
  • If you have multiple children, let them help rearrange the rings for extra fun and engagement.
  • Use this activity as a prompt for a building challenge with the kids using the stacking rings later in the day.
