About this idea
The elf has been busy swapping everyone's shoes around! Place the elf sitting in the middle of a circle of mismatched shoes - Dad's boot with Mom's slipper, big brother's sneaker with little sister's sandal. Leave tiny elf footprints (made with flour or baby powder) leading from the shoe rack to the scene. Kids will giggle trying to match them all back up!
What you'll need
- Elf doll
- Mismatched shoes from family members
- Flour or baby powder
- Small bowl
- Optional: paper or card for footprints
How to set it up
- Collect 4-6 pairs of shoes from different family members and place them in a circle on the floor in a mixed-up pattern.
- Sprinkle a small amount of flour or baby powder in a small bowl and use your finger to make tiny footprints leading from the shoe rack or closet to the circle of shoes.
- Place the elf doll sitting happily in the center of the circle of mismatched shoes, looking proud of its work.
- Optional: Create extra footprints leading back to the elf's hiding spot for an even funnier trail.
- Leave a simple note or draw a little question mark face to invite kids to find the matching pairs.
Tips & variations
- Use washable baby powder if you're concerned about mess, especially on carpets.
- For younger preschoolers, you can pre-mix some of the shoe pairs to make matching easier and more fun.
- Add a small mirror nearby so kids can see themselves trying on the funny mismatched pairs for extra giggles.
