A playful elf sits atop an empty egg carton, arms crossed, watching as paper eggs with tiny paper legs scatter across the kitchen counter, with one hiding behind a fruit bowl.

About this idea

The elf has raided the fridge and staged a dramatic egg jailbreak! Eggs are "running away" across the kitchen counter, each one given tiny paper legs taped underneath. The elf sits atop the empty egg carton like a lookout, arms crossed and totally unbothered, while the eggs scatter in every direction — some headed for the edge, one hiding behind the fruit bowl.

What you'll need

  • Paper eggs
  • Small piece of paper and tape for legs
  • Empty egg carton
  • Fruit bowl or other kitchen items for hiding spots
  • Marker or pen

How to set it up

  1. Draw and cut out small paper eggs, then tape tiny paper legs to the bottom of each egg.
  2. Place the empty egg carton upright on the kitchen counter and position your elf on top, sitting with arms crossed like a lookout.
  3. Scatter the paper eggs across the counter in different directions — place one behind the fruit bowl, and others heading toward the edge as if trying to escape.
  4. Optional: Use a marker to draw little faces or escape routes on some of the eggs for extra fun.

Tips & variations

  • Use different colored paper for the eggs to make the scene more vibrant and exciting for preschoolers.
  • For a reusable setup, laminate the paper eggs or use cardstock and keep the legs attached with Velcro dots.
  • Let your children help arrange the eggs and elf — they can come up with their own escape stories!
