About this idea
The elf has raided the sock drawer overnight and completely mismatched every single pair — hiding one sock from each pair in increasingly ridiculous spots around the room (tucked in a shoe, dangling from a lamp, rolled inside a hat). A tiny handwritten note reads: 'Matching is SO last year. 🧦✨' Kids have to hunt down all the missing socks before they can get dressed!
What you'll need
- A pair of mismatched socks for each child
- A small piece of paper and pencil or marker
- A few small hiding spots around the room (e.g., shoes, lampshade, hats, under furniture)
- Optional: small basket or bowl for collecting socks
- Optional: a small elf doll or figurine
How to set it up
- Write a tiny note on the paper saying: 'Matching is SO last year. 🧦✨' and place it where children will see it first thing in the morning.
- Hide one sock from each child’s pair in different, fun, and slightly challenging spots around the room — make sure locations are safe and accessible for preschoolers.
- If using an elf doll, place it near the note or in one of the hiding spots as if the elf is watching over the game.
- Encourage children to hunt for the missing socks before getting dressed — each time they find one, they can place it in a small basket or bowl.
- Once all socks are found, let the children enjoy matching their newly collected socks — perhaps even let them keep the mismatched set as a funny souvenir!
Tips & variations
- Use socks that aren’t your children’s favorite pairs so they don’t get upset if any get damaged during the hunt.
- Adjust the difficulty of hiding spots based on your child’s age and mobility — for preschoolers, stick to easy-to-reach places like under chairs, behind picture frames, or inside soft toys.
- After the hunt, turn it into a matching game — lay all the socks out and see who can pair them up the fastest!
