About this idea
The elf creates a mini shadow puppet theater using a flashlight and cutout shapes. Set up the elf behind a white pillowcase or sheet stretched between two chairs, with a flashlight pointing at the elf and paper cutouts of reindeer, snowmen, and Santa taped to popsicle sticks. The shadows project onto the sheet. Add a tiny sign: 'I stayed up all night making a show for you!' Preschoolers will love discovering the magical shadow theater and can play with it themselves.
What you'll need
- White pillowcase or sheet
- Two chairs
- Flashlight
- Paper cutouts of reindeer, snowmen, and Santa
- Popsicle sticks
How to set it up
- Stretch the white pillowcase or sheet between the two chairs to create a screen.
- Place the elf behind the screen and position the flashlight so it shines towards the elf and the screen.
- Tape the paper cutouts of reindeer, snowmen, and Santa to the popsicle sticks and let the elf hold them to create shadow puppets.
Tips & variations
- Use thick paper or cardstock for the cutouts to make the shadows clearer.
