About this idea

The elf has swapped the batteries out of every TV remote in the house and taped them to the ceiling fan blades with a tiny note reading 'Sorry โ€” I needed them for my sleigh GPS upgrade! ๐ŸŽ…โšก'. The elf sits nearby wearing a pair of googly eyes as 'night vision goggles', surrounded by a makeshift 'North Pole Tech Lab' sign made from a sticky note. Kids have to hunt down each remote and reinstall the batteries to restore order.

What you'll need

  • Sticky-backed tin foil or construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • A small sticky note or piece of paper
  • Battery holders from old remotes (optional for authenticity)
  • Scotch tape or hot glue gun (adult use only)
  • A ceiling fan (or a fan blade prop)

How to set it up

  1. Cut a small sticky note into a rectangle and write 'North Pole Tech Lab' on it. Attach it to a wall or shelf to create a sign.
  2. Attach googly eyes to a pair of old sunglasses or directly onto the elf doll using tape to create 'night vision goggles.'
  3. Carefully remove the batteries from all TV remotes in the house. (Note: Have an adult assist with this step for safety.)
  4. Using scotch tape, attach each battery to a different blade of the ceiling fan, spacing them out evenly.
  5. Place a tiny note near the fan that reads 'Sorry โ€” I needed them for my sleigh GPS upgrade! ๐ŸŽ…โšก' and position the elf nearby wearing the googly eye goggles, looking up at the batteries.

Tips & variations

  • For added challenge, mix up the batteries so kids have to figure out which battery goes in which remote. Use this as a learning moment about battery polarity and matching + to + and โ€“ to โ€“.
  • If you donโ€™t have a ceiling fan, use the blades of a table fan or even draw fan blades on cardboard and tape the batteries to that prop.
  • Make it extra fun by hiding a small treat or sticker inside each remote once the batteries are replaced, rewarding kids for completing the task.
